On 23-24 October 2023, President of ENEMO Ana Mihajlovic spoke at the High-level event organized by the EU Commission in Brussels on "Election observation for fair transparent electoral processes".
The event was an opportunity for the President of ENEMO to promote the organization's work and speak in defense of civil society observers, which face numerous challenges despite their crucial role in ensuring the integrity, transparency, and credibility of electoral processes.
She stated the importance for EU-country legislations to also facilitate citizen observation and use this as a way to enhance transparency and accountability of elected officials. By failing to allow domestic citizen observation, key electoral stakeholders are deprived of the opportunity to better improve legislation, practices, and bring their electoral environments more in line with international democratic standards.
Overall, she emphasized that CSOs and election monitors can play a defining role in increasing trust in the process and outcomes of elections. She added that election management bodies additionally benefit from the recommendations issued in the final reports of international election observation missions, such as ENEMO's.
